AI Ad Creative and Media Buying

Producing the volume of creative variants that modern platforms consume, with rights and disclosure handled properly, and running media where the platform's automation has taken over most of the levers.

Cleared first

Two things changed at once. Platforms now consume more creative variants than a studio can produce, and they took over most of the bidding decisions that media teams used to make. The remaining levers are creative, audience signal, budget structure and measurement — which is where the work now is.

In one paragraph

AI ad creative production uses generative tools to produce and adapt advertising assets at variant scale, with rights and disclosure controlled. AI media buying is the practice of operating campaigns on platforms whose bidding is automated, where performance depends on creative supply, signal quality and structure rather than manual bid management.

Rights and disclosure, settled before production

This is the part that creates real exposure, and it is settled at the start rather than raised at legal review:

  • Generation tool licensing. What the terms permit for commercial use, and what indemnity the provider does or does not offer.
  • Input rights. Whether you hold the rights to the imagery, footage and audio used as input or reference.
  • People. Synthetic presenters need clear disclosure; using a real person's likeness or voice needs explicit consent, and we will not produce a likeness of a real person without it.
  • Third-party brands and characters. Not reproduced in generated creative.
  • Disclosure. Where synthetic content must be marked — platform policies and, where applicable, the EU AI Act's content-marking duties. See EU AI Act compliance.
  • Claims. Generated copy is reviewed against your substantiation position; advertising claims are regulated regardless of who drafted them.
Worth knowing

What we will not produce

Creative depicting a real identifiable person without consent, fabricated testimonials or reviews, generated imagery presented as documentary or authentic photography of real events, or anything designed to be mistaken for independent editorial. These are declined whatever the campaign timeline.

Creative production at variant scale

Build a modular system, not one-off assets

Concepts, hooks, proof points, formats and calls to action as components that combine, so hundreds of coherent variants come from a defined set rather than from hundreds of separate briefs. This is what makes variant volume sustainable.

Keep brand control at the template level

Colour, type, logo placement, tone and prohibited claims enforced in the templates rather than checked per asset. Reviewing individually is where variant-scale production collapses back into manual work.

Localise properly

Adapting a campaign across markets involves language, cultural fit, regulatory differences and format conventions. Machine translation of ad copy without native review is a well-documented way to embarrass a brand.

Test structurally, not incidentally

Variants designed so that results attribute to a specific element — this hook, this proof point, this format. Otherwise you learn that one advert outperformed another and nothing about why, which teaches you nothing for the next campaign.

Watch for sameness

Generated creative across an industry converges toward a recognisable house style. Deliberate distinctiveness is a brief requirement, because blending into your category's visual language is a slow, invisible loss.

Media buying when the platform bids for you

LeverStill yours?What matters now
Bid managementLargely automated awayChoosing the right objective and target
Audience targetingReducedSignal quality: conversions fed back accurately
CreativeEntirely yoursNow the primary performance variable
Budget and structureYoursConsolidation, learning phases, avoiding fragmentation
MeasurementYoursPlatform-reported results overstate; verify independently

The measurement row is the one that costs money quietly. Platforms report conversions they claim credit for, using their own attribution, and the numbers rarely reconcile with your finance system. Independent measurement is the check. See marketing analytics and attribution.

Process

How the engagement runs

Rights and disclosure are cleared before production starts, not at legal review.

Weeks 1 to 2

Rights, disclosure and audit

Tool licensing, input rights and disclosure requirements settled; current creative and account structure assessed.

Weeks 3 to 4

Creative system design

Modular components, brand-controlled templates and the testing structure defined.

Weeks 5 to 8

Production and launch

Variants produced at scale, campaigns restructured, conversion signal quality fixed.

Weeks 9 to 10

Optimisation

Structural testing run so results attribute to specific elements; platform reporting reconciled against independent measurement.

Weeks 11 to 12

Handover

Templates, component library, testing method and the rights checklist handed over.

Fit check

Is this the right engagement?

Worth being direct. AI Ad Creative and Media Buying is the wrong spend in some situations, and those are listed rather than buried.

Good fit if

  • Creative supply is the bottleneck on paid performance.
  • Campaigns run across many markets, formats or audiences.
  • Platform automation has removed the levers your team used to pull.
  • Platform-reported results do not reconcile with finance.
  • Rights and disclosure around generated creative are unresolved.

Choose something else if

  • Spend is too low for variant testing to conclude anything.
  • You want creative depicting real people without consent, or fabricated endorsements.
  • The requirement is attribution and measurement. See marketing analytics.
  • Brand and legal cannot agree a disclosure position.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Marked up with FAQPage schema so these answers can surface directly in search results and inside AI assistant responses.

Can we use AI-generated imagery in advertising?

Usually, subject to the generation tool's licence terms, your rights in any input material, platform disclosure policies and — where applicable — content-marking duties under the EU AI Act. We settle this before production rather than at legal review, because unwinding a produced campaign is expensive.

Can you generate a spokesperson or use a celebrity likeness?

We can produce clearly synthetic presenters with appropriate disclosure. We will not generate the likeness or voice of a real identifiable person without their explicit consent, and we do not produce fabricated testimonials or endorsements in any framing. Those are declined regardless of the campaign timeline.

Does creative volume actually improve performance?

On platforms with automated bidding, creative is now the main variable you control, so supply matters more than it used to. Volume alone does not help — variants have to be structurally different enough that results attribute to a specific element, otherwise you learn which advert won and nothing about why.

Why do platform-reported conversions not match our finance numbers?

Because platforms use their own attribution and count conversions they claim credit for, which systematically overstates. Independent measurement — incrementality testing and modelling against your own commercial data — is the check, and the gap is usually material. See marketing analytics and attribution.

Will AI-generated creative make us look like everyone else?

It can, and it is a real risk. Generated creative across an industry converges toward a recognisable house style, so distinctiveness has to be a deliberate brief requirement rather than an assumed output. Blending into your category's visual language is a slow loss that no performance metric will flag.
