AI for Market Research Agencies
Coding open-ended responses is the strongest case in research; replacing respondents with a model is where the discipline gets sold something it should refuse.
Market research exists to find out what people actually think, which makes it the one sector where a technology that produces plausible human-sounding output needs handling with unusual care.
AI for market research covers open-ended response coding, qualitative transcript analysis with traceability, survey design support, panel and data quality detection, report and deliverable production, and honest evaluation of synthetic data and simulated respondent approaches.
Open-end coding, the application that simply works
Coding free-text survey responses to a frame is high-volume, repetitive, inconsistently done by tired humans, and directly checkable. It is one of the cleanest AI applications in any professional services vertical.
- Consistency beats human coding at volume. Multiple coders drift from each other and from themselves across a long study; a model does not.
- The coding frame is the real work. A good frame produces good coding; the model does not fix a frame that does not fit the data.
- Emergent themes need a human pass. Codes that were not in the frame are frequently the finding, and a system that forces everything into existing codes hides them.
- Verification is cheap and should be mandatory. A sample re-coded by a researcher establishes agreement rates you can report to the client.
- Multi-language coding is transformed. International studies previously required coders per market; that constraint has genuinely eased.
Report inter-coder agreement, as you always did
Research has an established quality standard for coding: agreement between coders, measured and reported. Applying the same standard to model coding — a researcher independently coding a sample, agreement calculated and disclosed in the methodology — turns an unverified black box into a documented method a client can evaluate. It is the discipline's own existing practice, and applying it is the difference between an efficiency gain and an unaccountable shortcut.
Synthetic respondents, addressed directly
What they actually are
A model simulating survey responses reproduces the patterns in text it was trained on about a population. That is a description of what has been written about people, not a measurement of what those people currently think.
Where the failure is worst
Precisely where research is most valuable: novel products, emerging attitudes, minority segments and anything the model has not read about. The model will produce confident, plausible, wrong answers in exactly those cases, and it cannot signal that it is doing so.
Where it has legitimate uses
Pilot testing a questionnaire for comprehension and flow, stress-testing an analysis pipeline before fieldwork, and generating hypotheses to test with real respondents. Each is a use where nobody is asked to believe the output describes a population.
The line we hold
We will build synthetic data tooling for questionnaire testing and pipeline development. We will not build a system whose output is presented to a client as research findings, and we say so at the proposal stage because it is a difference of principle rather than of scope.
Qualitative analysis and panel quality
| Application | Fit | Design requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Transcript coding and theme extraction | Strong | Every theme traceable to the quotes supporting it |
| Cross-study synthesis | Good | Provenance and fieldwork dates on every source |
| Verbatim retrieval by theme | Strong | Researchers find supporting quotes in minutes rather than hours |
| Fraudulent and bot response detection | Strong | A growing and genuine panel problem, and directly measurable |
| Straightlining and low-effort detection | Strong | Established methods, improved by pattern analysis |
| Survey design support | Good | Question wording and flow review; not a replacement for a methodologist |
| Report and deliverable drafting | Good | From your own analysis, with claims traceable to data |
| Interpretation and recommendation | No | This is what the client is buying from a researcher |
Panel fraud is the problem AI is best placed to solve here
Fraudulent and low-effort responses have become a serious threat to data quality, and the same technology that makes synthetic respondents tempting also makes fake survey responses easier to produce at scale. Detection — response pattern analysis, timing, text authenticity, cross-study duplication — is a genuinely strong application that protects the thing research sells. It is a better investment than simulating respondents, and it addresses a problem the industry actually has.
How an engagement runs
Coding and quality first, because both are measurable against the discipline's own standards.
Scope and frame review
Coding frames, study types, and where consistency currently breaks down.
Coding build
Frame-based coding with emergent theme surfacing and an agreement measurement step.
Qualitative and retrieval
Transcript analysis with every theme traceable to supporting verbatims.
Data quality
Fraud, bot and low-effort detection tuned against your own panel history.
Operation
Agreement rates monitored study by study, frames updated as categories evolve.
What you receive
Coding at volume with the quality evidence attached, and cleaner data underneath it.
Open-end coding
To your frames, with emergent themes surfaced rather than forced into existing codes.
Agreement measurement
Researcher-coded samples, agreement calculated and disclosable in the methodology.
Qualitative theme extraction
Every theme traceable to the verbatims supporting it.
Verbatim retrieval
Supporting quotes found by theme in minutes across studies.
Panel quality detection
Fraud, bot and low-effort responses identified before they reach the analysis.
Multi-language coding
Consistent frames applied across markets without a coder per market.
Is this the right starting point?
Worth being direct. There are situations in market research where custom AI work is the wrong spend, and those are listed rather than buried.
Worth doing if
- Open-end coding is a turnaround bottleneck and consistency varies between coders.
- Qualitative transcripts are analysed manually and prior studies are never revisited.
- Panel data quality is a known concern and detection is manual or absent.
- International studies are constrained by coder availability per market.
- You are being asked about synthetic respondents and want an assessment rather than a pitch.
Do something else if
- You want synthetic respondents presented to clients as research findings.
- Coding frames are unstable enough that consistent coding is not meaningful.
- There is no willingness to measure and report agreement rates.
- You want the model to produce the interpretation rather than the coded data.
Frequently asked questions

Are synthetic respondents a real research method?
For questionnaire testing, pipeline development and hypothesis generation, yes. For producing findings about what a population thinks, no — and we will not build that. A model simulating respondents reproduces patterns in what has been written about a group, which is not a measurement of what that group currently thinks. The failure is worst precisely where research is most valuable: novel products, emerging attitudes and minority segments, where the model produces confident, plausible, wrong answers and cannot signal that it is doing so. The distinction to hold is whether anyone is being asked to believe the output describes real people.
How do we know the model coded our open-ends correctly?
By applying the standard the discipline already has. Have a researcher independently code a sample, calculate agreement, and disclose it in the methodology exactly as you would for human coders. That turns model coding from an unverified shortcut into a documented method a client can evaluate, and it is cheap. The related requirement is emergent themes: a system that forces every response into your existing frame will hide the codes that were not anticipated, and those are frequently the finding.
What is the strongest application in research?
Open-end coding, and after that panel quality detection. Coding is high-volume, repetitive, inconsistent when done by tired humans across a long study, and directly checkable — which makes it one of the cleanest applications in professional services. Panel quality is the more urgent problem: fraudulent and low-effort responses have become a genuine threat to data validity, made worse by the same technology that makes synthetic respondents tempting. Detection protects the thing research actually sells, which is a better investment than simulating the respondents you are struggling to verify.
Can AI write our reports?
It can draft from your analysis and it should not produce the interpretation. Assembling findings, pulling supporting verbatims, drafting descriptive sections and building consistent deliverables are real time savings, and every claim should trace back to the data supporting it. What the client is buying is the researcher's judgement about what the findings mean for their decision, which is the part that cannot be shown to have been reasoned rather than asserted. Deliverable production is automatable; the interpretation is the service.
Does using AI need disclosing to clients?
In our view yes, and increasingly clients ask before you offer. Research is sold on methodological credibility, and a client discovering afterwards that coding was model-assisted has a legitimate complaint even where the quality was good. Disclosing the method, along with the agreement rates measured against researcher coding, converts it from a concealed shortcut into a documented approach — and in practice agencies with a clear position on this are winning work from clients who have been burned by ones without.
